Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things on earth become strangely dim
In the light of His Glory and Grace.
From the hymn Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus
Written by Helen H. Lemmel, 1922
This morning I looked out of my hotel window to a view of the Rocky Mountains. A crane from a construction site was right in my view - between me and those beautiful mountains. At first, all I could focus on was that crane – blocking my view of those beautiful snow covered mountains. That crane was ruining my morning – ruining my view.
Then I concentrated on the mountains. As I stood at the window and concentrated on the mountains, the crane faded and the beauty of the mountains came through.
That made me think - How many times do we focus on what gets between us and God? How many times do we focus on the “cranes” that get in our way – the sin, the burdens, the pain? How many times do we let those things get in the way of seeing the beauty and Grace and love of Christ? How many times do the burdens of our day get between us and Christ?
Until I opened my eyes to the beauty of those mountains, the crane got in my way. I was focusing on the wrong thing. I focused on the crane, the barrier that got in my way, instead of the beauty of the mountains – the face of Christ.
Thank you, God for opening my eyes and helping me focus on the true gifts that you give me every day. Help me every day to look past the barriers so that I can see Your wonderful face. Amen.
