Matthew 7:7
Sometimes the most insignificant moments can change a life.
I was 12 years old – standing at the back door of my home, watching my older brother, Al, work on his antique Model A Ford Truck. That truck was a rust bucket, but my brother was determined. It would be pristine with the work he was putting into it.
My brother and I hadn’t gotten along particularly well since – well, since I came home from the hospital after my birth, I guess. We loved each other – because in our home, we had to – but we never did like each other much.
As I stood there looking at him work, I heard this little voice inside of me say, “Ask if you can help.” My response to that little voice was “yeah right!”. The voice persisted – “Ask if you can help”. I ignored the voice, but it kept coming into my head. It wouldn’t let up.
Finally, I asked my brother, “Do you need some help”? I fully expected him to tell me to “Bug off”. But Al looked up at me and said, “Yeah, I would like the company”.
I joined him the front seat of that truck - except there weren’t any seats. We sat on the floorboard! As he sanded, I watched. Suddenly, the sanding stopped; my big brother took his eye protection goggles off and handed them to me. “Put these on”, he said. “I don’t want you to get anything in your eyes.”
That was the moment. That small act changed my life. My brother put me before himself. He put my eyes before his. He put my safety before his very own.
That was the moment when my brother became my hero, my protector, and my friend. This was a huge moment in my life.
Here’s the thing, though. When I reminded my brother, Al, of that moment a few years ago, he didn’t even remember it. He didn’t have a tiny recollection of that day.
He changed my life – and the moment was so insignificant to him that he didn’t even remember it.
We never know when God will use us to affect someone’s life. Sometimes the most insignificant thing can affect someone around us in a very significant way. We never know when Christ might use us to touch the life of another. It makes you think, doesn’t it, about whose life you have touched today.
Lord, use me to your Glory to touch those around me in a positive way. Let those around me see your love in me. Open my eyes, Lord, to that one person who I can bring joy to today... Amen.
